Jam at Pete's Place - Eladio Pamaran (We're All Alone)

FRIDAY JAM UPDATE & PHOTOS - DEC. 29, 2017

Last night was the final jam for the year and just like fireworks the year ender did not conclude without a bang. The vibe and energy of everyone in the room was totally immense and spirited all the way through. The jam was awesome from start to finish with everyone in stride and in high gear. It was a perfect way to end year 2017.
Our jam finale started quite early with a majority of awesome guitar talents showing up to gather on stage. Among the guitar greats who did perform were Joaco Marco, Pj Cura, Tosh Murayama, Richard Parcia and balik-music room Reg Gutierrez. Timely, Rodney Nuval, a Virginia based balik-bayan friend of house band vocalist Monchie Henares and last night’s special guest, was himself a prolific guitarist as well. With him was his lifetime partner Nina Gabriel.
Dubbed as the night of guitar players, a total of 5 superb guitarists all togetherly working in total synchrony and harmony was amazing and entertaining to watch. If you are a rock aficionado, last night was absolutely the night for you. The jam was relentless and solid with mostly classic rock songs on the repertoire. Each musician was in the zone and masterfully playing at their best to the delight of the crowd. It was breathtaking to experience to say the least.
Among the other musicians who participated were house band drummer Bubui Colico, vocalists Monchie Henares, Marc de Asis and Tony Tirol, bassists Rick Trinidad and Kate Adriano, Michelle Adriano, and houseband honcho Tinnie Esguerra, who is himself a guitar virtuoso but just opted to give way and instead played the keys.
Arabelle Jimenez, who arrived late from another previous event, came with a good friend who jammed with the band too. Eladio Pamaran, his name is, is an accomplished singer. A former vocalist of the renowned vocal group “The New Minstrels” back in the 90’s (or was it the 80’s) and currently performing in one of the lead roles as “the engineer” in the German edition of “Miss Saigon”. He wowed everyone with a sampling of his talent with some song renditions of classic and contemporary standard tunes along with Tinnie on the keyboards, Rick on bass, Tosho on guitar & myself on drums to cap the night. Truly an excellent showcase of talents and music from all the performers on stage all throughout the evening. What else can you possibly ask for?
And so as we bring to a close 2017, we first and foremost praise and thank God Almighty for all the wonderful and unforgettable happenings we had cherished in the music room all year long. Countless blessings, the ups and downs, the victories as well as the challenges are all part of the wonderful ride we are honored and privileged to experience. Indeed, there was never ever a dull moment. Thank you Lord!
Likewise, our uttermost and lasting gratitude to all the bands, guest musicians, to the regular house band, friends and family for being an enormous part of the success of year 2017. Maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat!.
And so, as we approach 2018, we earnestly look forward in anticipation to an even more promising and exciting year ahead.
A HEALTHY, HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE NEW YEAR TO ALL! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Dec. 15, 2017 - Allan Flores warming up w/ Loren Orendain & Rick Trinidad (Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd)

DEC. 15, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE & PHOTOS

The 2017 Pete’s Place Music Room Christmas party billed as “A Christmas Gala Night With Mom” set just a week from now is expected to be another epic and an unprecedented event of its kind being the very first time our beloved moms (who will be present) will be bestowed as our guests of honor. Just our simple and humble way of giving recognition and appreciation for the unconditional love and sacrifice they had withstood and endured for us all these years. What better time to celebrate their greatness and munificence but on the advent of Christmas. Truly, an event i am very much looking forward to as it is also my mom’s 86th birthday.
Last night’s mood turned out to be the “calm before the storm” sort of vibe despite a respectable number of guests and friends showing up. We had a fairly good band line up, as well, with some key personalities making it despite Christmas parties everywhere and the horrendous traffic all around the metropolis.
Bataan based and rhythm man Allan Flores found himself back in the room, for two consecutive weekends already, hoping to make up for his apparent absence at the party next week. Formerly based in Cebu, Air Asia Flyboy Loren Orendain, was the first to arrive. Now on his way to becoming a full-fledged captain soon, he is now re-assigned back in Manila for good. House band guitarist Joaco Marco who finally found free time from his ultra busy schedule, after almost a month being unavailable, was in the house as well. House band honcho Tinnie Esguerra braved the traffic and made it over at already past 1am. Among the other musicians who showed up were vocalist Monchie Henares, percussionist Vincent Garrucho and bassist Rick Trinidad. Incidentally, it was the perfect time for Rick to finally try out his new 6-string Ibanez bass he recently acquired in the US.
Unrelenting and lasting till past 5am, the jam was delightfully nice and sweet and definitely more productive with last night’s line-up. Joaco’s presence was surely missed and was a welcome addition. With Allan adding more rhythm, Tinnie in his usual precise musical perspective and leadership leading the pack, Rick and his bass skills, Monchie and Vincent in their usual element doing what they do best and my humble participation as well, were all part of the superb sound that permeated the place. I must say that indeed the Magic Hour lives on. Praise and thank God.
My gratitude to all the other friends and guests who showed up and participated. To Kikoy Ventura, Marc de Asis along with his Sales Team comprising of Mariam Mariano, Jasmine Poblete, Charles Manlosa, Mark De la Peña, Macky Esguerra and Divina Gracia Ramirez, I thank you all. Also, we welcome back balik-bayan and music room pioneer Tosho Murayama, who will be in town for the party and for the rest of the holiday season.
Finally, let me not forget to thank Loren and Marc for all the boxes of sumptuous pizzas and sodas you had shared with everyone. It was another gastronomic experience for everyone who partook. God bless your generosity.
See you all on the Dec. 22nd for our 2017 “A Christmas Gala Night With Mom” Christmas Party!
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Dec. 8, 2017 - Allan Flores (Words)

DEC. 8, 2017 – FRIDAY JAM UPDATE & PHOTOS

For two consecutive weekends, our Friday gathering resulted in a similar arrangement with the guests split up into two venues. Just like the last time, my wife Vicky and her group gathered at the Lanai area while the rest of the regulars converged at the music room. Personally, i find the recent option convenient for Vicky and friends as they need not have to congregate elsewhere far to party. Not really the live music kind of crowd, their group prefers to spend their bonding time with some friendly chit chat, food and drinks at someplace else before they can even join us in the room, if at all. At least with this new setup option, we are all closer together and just under one roof.
Incidentally, both parties garnered much lesser attendees compared to the past week. Perhaps with Christmas functions happening left and right, bad traffic and what not, this occurrence should not be surprising at all. Nevertheless, despite the minor setback we still won’t be deprived of our regular Friday night fix.
At the music room, high school batch mate Allan Flores’ surprise presence was totally a welcome development. After a long time in absentia, it was great to see him back. Based in Bataan, we really don’t see him very often. Commuting all the way to the music room and then travel back to the province right after just to be able to visit and jam, is quite a remarkable feat. Our hats off to our dear Rockerboy brader Allan Flores.
Vocalist Monchie Henares, Arabelle Jimenez, percussionist Vincent Garrucho along with his talented daughter Maxine, vocalist Tony Tirol, Marc de Asis & his staff, Nikki Segundo (his birthday is actually today Dec. 9), Tecci Sevilla who joined us briefly before going up to the Lanai and young couple Christian Villanueva and his partner Abigail Cruz, were the only guys who showed up.
Looking at the list of musicians who made it, there was clearly no proper house band roster to speak of.
Determined as we always are, mustering up with just vocalists, a percussionist and myself to perform, is no excuse to sulk. We won’t be denied of stage time on our much anticipated Friday Jam Night. Allan’s gallant effort to travel far just to be with us will definitely not be for naught.
Soon the jam commences with Allan and Vincent alternating on guitar while I played bass. Monchie and Tony on vocal chores most of the evening. Occasionally, Monchie played the drums while Allan tinkered with the keyboards. Vincent played percussions and 2nd vocals.
The unique sound that we eventually produced was bordering on satisfactory to tolerable to totally hilarious. Nevertheless, it was still enjoyable and satisfying to say the least. We did accomplish completing some songs eventually. However, there were also times that i was almost in tears for laughing so hard while we were struggling, trying to complete a tune. Well, nothing like variety to make life more interesting.
The gathering concluded early, duplicating last week’s finish. With everyone needing an early respite for some early commitments they have the next day, everyone decided to pack up and call it a night at exactly 4am. On his way out, batch mate Allan ended up hitching a ride with Vincent & Maxine to the terminal in Pasay to catch his bus ride back to Bataan. What a trooper, Allan is.
Special thanks to post birthday celebrant Arabelle and birthday boy Nikki Segundo for the sumptuous pancit palabok, wine and chips they shared with everyone. God bless both their kind souls. Wishing them all the best in all of their future endeavors.
And so another successful Friday Jam Night in the books. Already looking forward to next week. As always, I thank and praise God for the opportunity.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Dec. 1, 2017 - I Will Always Stay In Love This Way

DEC. 2, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE & PHOTOS

It’s our first Friday Jam Night in the month of December and the yuletide season is certainly upon us. In just a few weeks it’ll be Christmas. Truly, how time flies when you’re having fun. Though different in complexion every time, whether a packed room or just a few in attendance, as always, our Friday gatherings never fails to bring joy and gratification to everyone who comes each and every time.

Last night was quite unique with the gathering divided into two settings. My wife Vicky with her siblings and some friends converged and cozied up all night to enjoy their bonding time in the lanai area while the rest of the guests stayed down in the music room. Incidentally, only a handful of musicians showed up to jam.
Similarly to last week, it was quite late before we even started playing. Well timed that our new Finnish friend, and guitarist Aksu Arola, showed up to add to the roster. Percussionist Vincent Garrucho and his talented vocalist daughter Maxine were also in the house, as well as my high school batchmate, Jun Bediones, who obliged taking over the drumming chores for most of the evening. Vocalist Monchie Henares, who was with birthday girl Arabelle Jimenez, made it to the list as well and as expected, i was to be the bass player. When house band honcho Tinnie Esguerra arrived we were complete and good to go.
The jam was not as lengthy, as in most nights, lasting only about a few hours before we were done and over. We started at past midnight and were finished by 4am. Though not at all a reflection of complaisance nor lack of interest from the jammers to perform but just a coincidence that most needed to leave early for one reason or the other. Nevertheless, we were still able to record on video a few of our work before we called it a night. No complaints.
At closing time, Aksu, was still enjoying his last round of beer when the rest of the guys bid good bye to go home. That was only 4am. Left all by himself, I kept Aksu company and encouraged him to stay around and not to rush and just enjoy and finish his drink. Good opportunity also for him to contact his apparent UBER ride home. It was 4:30an when his ride arrived to pick him up. Congratulations and best wishes to Aksu Arola and his filipina fiancee on their upcoming wedding, soon to happen.
After I finally closed
up, i left the room and joined my wife and family at the lanai where they were still there partying. Stayed with them for a while but finally called it a night at about 5:30 am. The lanai group , I learned, apparently packed up by sunrise. All’s well that ends well. Praise and thank God.
And so our countdown for Christmas day begins. ‘Tiss the season to be jolly! Peace on earth goodwill to men.
Till the next jam night...
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - The house band trying out "Brazil"

NOV. 24, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE & PHOTOS

One can’t really predict the outcome of each and every Friday jam night prematurely before it is all over. There will always be surprises awaiting to happen. Just when I thought that it was going to be a dead night, with still no guests around at already past 11pm, things turned around quickly for the better. Immediately, when the first wave of guests arrived at about 11:20, the place suddenly sprung into action with more regulars and a lot more showing up to party.
It was Johnny Wassmer and Girrard Jison who were the first comers followed by Air Force brats John-John de Leon and Paul Diano some minutes later. All four came from some other gathering but similary decided to swing by the music room for their next stop. Soon percussionist and all-around musician Vincent Garrucho walks in to join. Though still short of a proper band line-up, it was just too late in the evening to pass up. It was almost midnight and we haven’t set foot on stage yet. Vincent and I will have to do for starters. And so, Vincent wound up tinkering with the guitar while I played bass.
At past midnight the jam officially commences. The band became more cohesive with house band honchos Tinnie Esguerra and drummer Bubui Colico joining in. Husky vocalist Monchie Henares finally makes an appearance fresh from another event and went on board as well.
Youthful and talented musician Pau Villanueva, her dad and her mom Carmen along with a horde of friends and musicians in total jubilation, made a surprise visit to celebrate her band’s 2nd place finish at the just concluded Wander Battle band Competition where they just came from. Congratulations to Carousel Casualties band for the win. More power to your group.
The house band took a break and allowed the youngsters stage time to enjoy and have fun themselves. Looking very much hyped from a successful night they had, the young blood jammed their hearts out on stage to the delight of Pau’s parents and the rest of the appreciative crowd they tagged along. Comprising of musicians from 3 different bands, the group played and collaborated on some of their signature song choices. You can tell how familiar their songs where to their friends as the crowd were actually singing along with them while they were performing. Amusing indeed. Kudos to the guys.
After the guests had left, the house band got back on stage, carried on and played some more till about closing time. Most of the regulars were still around chilling and having a few more drinks. Left on stage were just Tinnie, Vincent, myself and Monchie’s husky voice. Incidentally, by this time drummer Bubui had already made a french exit. By the way, Luisa Distor did a few songs too.
And so, what i initially perceived to be a dead night turned out to be something special. As always our regular Friday Jams are unpredictable and full of welcome surprises. God is great. I praise and thank Him every minute.
Tonight (Nov. 25 Saturday) the music room will be exclusively reserved to host Martha Aquino’s post 22nd birthday celebration. Happy birthday Martha! Another great night in the offing. Already looking forward to it.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Nov. 17, 2017 - Hurt

NOV. 17, 2017 – FRIDAY JAM UPDATE AND PHOTOS

Tranquil and relaxed was to be the general description to last night’s Friday Jam mood in comparison to the past weekend. With a few regular guys showing up, if not only for another welcome stranger who had unceremoniously ventured to search and experience the place first hand, there was no compelling story to tell.
Music room explorer Aksu Arola (a Finnish nationale, if I am not mistaken) and his Filipina wife made a surprise visit to check out our humble place. Apparently, he had been a fan of our weekend jams and had been checking out our jam videos regularly posted on facebook. His wife had confessed that she had actually witnessed him watching our vids with interest repeatedly in the past before eventually deciding to come over.
Like the others who had done the same before and now had become music room regulars themselves, he too gambled and took the chance coming out to explore to see for himself what was in store being a part of it. Obviously an aficionado, Aksu was a musician himself and played the guitar. He was totally committed and eager to come to jam with the guys. And so he did finally get his wish.
Aksu came well prepared and brought along his gear complete with his guitar and effects. Along with bassist Rick Trinidad, keyboardist Pecky Casuela and myself on drums, we were good and ready to jam. As a personal preference, our newbie musician opted to play the blues and some slow rock tunes where he was comfortable with which we readily obliged. Our new guest gave a good accounting of his talent contributing a unique blend of his guitar playing style alongside the band. We tried a few bluesy and jazzy inspired progressions to test his adaptability and versatility but eventually sat it out to try out some other time.
Aksu and his partner ( I apologizes for not recalling her name) didn’t plan to really stay very long as they had to run to tend to their newly born child (3 months old) waiting at home but overstayed till past 2am obviously enjoying their time with us. Residing in a condo complex not far from our location, it won’t be surprising to see them back soon. Welcome to the music room Aksu Arola and wife.
Later on at the Magic Hour, the band became more progressive with guitarist Joaco Marco, percussionist Vincent Garrucho, vocalists Monchie Henares and Tony Tirol adding to the list. We had so much fun recounting and reviewing old time favorites with the likes of Steely Dan, James Taylor, Calapana, Michael Franks and a lot more with Joaco around. The jam went on continually till about sunrise just a tag before 6am. We are all glad that Joaco finally found free time from his ultra busy schedule and be with us again. Such a key player for the houseband, I hope Joaco can come more frequently from now on. After all he is a pillar and an important cog, so to speak, to the house band. Crossing my fingers and toes on that one.
Special thanks to Roger Salazar, Girrard Jison, Nikki Segundo and Luisa Distor for their presence as well.
Already looking forward to next week’s jam. I thank and praise God for giving us the opportunity!
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Nov. 10, 2017 - Capping the night w/ a Xmas song (Vincent Garrucho & Mayette Clemente)

NOV. 10, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE

Timely, just a few hours after tropical storm “Salome” had crossed and left our shores, the rains stopped and the weather improved considerably just in time to give way to our much anticipated Friday Jam Night gathering. The forthcoming long weekend helped, as well, resulting to favorable traffic conditions in most thoroughfares, as some vacationers must have already taken advantage and skadoodled to some out of town destination.

The evening turned out to be extra special having granted our humble place the honor to host again an important occasion. Celebrant Mayette Clemente, her siblings Nando & Toby Alberto along with his “wedding inaanaks” Eloisa Mae and Paulo Laqui decided to drop by to spend and enjoy the evening for an extended birthday celebration (actual birthday was Nov. 8) in the music room. It is always an honor and a pleasure for me to be a part of such an event. Our belated birthday greetings to Mayette.

The guests stayed and partied tirelessly from start to finish with the celebrant and her siblings staying till closing time at nearly sunrise at past 5am. The group even brought along a sumptuous spread of food comprising of spicy chicken wings, baked macaroni, chips, a bottle of sparkling wine and sodas generously prepared for everyone to partake. Our gastronomic cravings totally satisfied. Thank you so much!

The band comprising of Rick Trinidad, Vincent Garrucho, Bubui Colico, Tinnie Esguerra and Monchie Henares was on queu and productive as well giving ample entertainment for the whole evening. We started off with just Rick, Vincent and myself on board but quickly made up when the rest of the other band mates showed up. Naturally Mayette, Toby and Nando had their stage time doing vocals with the band as well. Kudos to Mayette for being game and a trooper despite nursing a sore throat. Likewise to Nando and to music room newbie Toby for their vocal contribution. Oh i almost forgot...the young couple Eloisa Mae and Paulo also had their share playing bass and percussions with the band at some point. Good jam guys!

Special mention to my dear high school batchmates Jun Bediones and Appie Ramos for their invaluable presence. Truly a blessing to continue to see and be with childhood friends of more than 40 years. Indeed, we’ve gone a long way. I hope to see these guys again very soon. God bless and good health to them both.

And so another fun and glorious weekend at the music room had transpired. We look forward to more and more exciting times ahead. As always, i thank and praise God for each and every opportunity.

Till then…..

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

NOV. 3, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE

An early start welcomed our Friday Jam Night and prospered throughout the evening all the way till about sunrise with a respectable number of attendees and musicians around to party. Some had even signified to come as early as 7pm to make a head start. Fortunately, the weather and traffic condition cooperated and posed no obstacle to the guys. Surely another marathon night of fun and frolic worthwhile for those who made it.

Dear friends Monchie Henares and Arabelle Jimenez came ahead of the pack, arriving early just in time for dinner. They even brought along a generous supply of sumptuous home made spaghetti that Arabelle prepared to add to the meal i had prepared for them at the dinner table upstairs. We did take our sweet time satisfying our gastronomic cravings before we headed down to the music room.
After dinner we were welcomed by more guests and friends who had already arrived. Percussionist Vincent Garrucho, his daughter Maxine and her friend were already in the room as well as guitar wizard Anton Atengco and drummer Bubui Colico.
The guys took their sweet time, too, settling down while savouring and enjoying the yummy pizzas that Bubui brought along. Four big party boxes all in all. Plastic bags of chips courtesy of the other guests and ice cold beers in the cooler were all out for the taking. Time to party!
Finally, the jam commences with Anton on lead guitar, Rick Trinidad on bass and Bubui on drums. Balik-music room stalwart Richard Parcia played rhythm guitar and tinkered on the keys at some point while Erwin Dimaculangan played 2nd lead. Vincent, on the other hand, was on percussions and flute.
Seeing that all the bases were already covered was indeed gratifying. The more the merrier, as I always say. After all, i do have all night to have my chance to play...no problem at all. A perfect time for me to handle the snap shots and videos for the gathering.
The band played a diversity of genres from Rock to jazz to fusion to classics to OPMs alternating band members, trying out each specific song choices for hours. A few minutes of toilet break and some smokes at the smoking area was all the respite available between sets.
It wasn’t surprising that after hours of continuous playing fatigue will take its toll. In effect, at around 2am the stage suddenly turned quiet. At this point, some musicians and guests will have their fill and already be heading for home. Thanks guys!
It was 4:30 am when we finally got our second wind back. With mostly the regular house band guys left to play, it was time for the Magic Hour. Spearheaded by the main man Tinnie Esguerra, we were still able to do countless tunes with Vincent, Monchie and myself along side. We must have had too much fun that we found ourselves ignoring the time concluding just before 6am. What a night! As always, I praise and thank God for the opportunity.
Thanks to all the other guests who joined us. Special mention to my wife Vicky, sis-in-laws Ana and Tintin, good friends Bambi Rubio, Luisa Distor, Johnny Wassmer, Alan Rufino, Myron Reyes, Randy Soliven, Frank Resulta, Michael & Amar Puyat and their friends and to the rest of the guys that i failed to mention…thank you so much! We hope to see you all next time soon.
And so another night of fun, bonding and blessings for all of us. Praise be to God!
Till the next time……
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Oct. 27, 2017 - Vincent Garrucho (Long Ago And Far Away)

OCTOBER 27, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE

The outcome was like the good old vintage music room vibe all over again with hoards of merrymakers individually and in groups randomly dropping by to party. And indeed it turned out to be an exciting one. To highlight were Air Force brat and good friend John-John de Leon’s impromptu birthday bash (actual birthday Oct. 26), Red Aquino and wife Portia and their son’s presence on their wedding anniversary, the surprise comeback of Nando Alberto and his sister Mayette Clemente and my wife Vicky’s lively and crazy gang’s participation were on the top of the list. Totally non-stop fun and frolic lasting till sunrise.
Flyboy Loren Orendain held on to his reputation and was still the early bird amongst the guests. Soon after, the others arrived with the birthday boy ahead of the pack. Apparently, John-John had planned to invite over some of his close friends to join him to celebrate. It was heartwarming having to witness the love and overwhelming support he got. Expecting just a few company turned out to be plenty. Soon the room was packed with merrymakers with everyone cozied up and having a great time.
Despite being under manned, the jam was not so bad either. It started off with just Loren, Rick Trinidad and myself on stage. Quickly, bassist Dennis Espiritu added to the line-up alternating playing keyboards while Rick played bass and myself on drums. We did some rock tunes to entice John-John to join as he has a knack of singing too. Birthday boy obliged, did vocals and performed to the delight of his friends.
When Tinnie Esguerra and Vincent Garrucho arrived, the band became more productive. Balik-music room Nando and Mayette also got what they came for having stage time with the band timely when we were more complete. Seeing the two stay to jam till past 5am surely is a good sign.
By 3am, most of the new guests had trickled out and left for home already happy and content from partying. As expected, the regulars were still intact alive and kicking. With Tinnie, Vincent, Rick, Dennis, Red (playing drums on some songs) and myself along with vocalists Nando and Mayette on stage, it was time for the magic hour. Time to shift to jazz.
Finally, at exactly 6:10am with just Tinnie, Vincent and myself being the last 3 men standing, the jam finally comes to an end but not without accomplishing an mtv take with Vincent on the flute. It actually did turn out quite nice. Praise and thank God!
To all the other hoard of friends and guests who showed up and made the evening extra special, i thank you all so much for coming. Till the next time.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Oct. 20, 2017 - Let's Stay Together

OCTOBER 20, 2017 – FRIDAY JAM UPDATE & PHOTOS

The unforeseen happened last night when after setting up the music room for our regular Friday jam, I suddenly became ill with stomach pains that developed to unbearable proportions. Tracing back on what must have triggered it and similarly supported by the attending physician after a thorough check up at Comcare where I was brought, it was primarily deemed to be a result of severe pressure applied for too long to the diaphragm/abdominal region on a full stomach. Having to siesta, immediately after on that condition, exacerbated the condition. Too much pressure developed into acute acid reflux and stomach spasms had progressed manifesting as soon as I woke up.
Apparently, the lengthy and tedious saxophone practice i did was one of the reasons. I had just finished having a heavy meal when I decided to cram on the sax parts of a song that we agreed to do, just to be ready for the jam. Having not played for a while, it took me some time before i got myself back in the flow with a more controlled and relaxed blowing technique. The pressure was too much for my diaphragm and abdominal region on a full stomach and had taken its toll.
A few hours of rehearsing, I then decided to stop and rest. Exhausted with my stomach feeling bloated with air, it was time for my siesta. When i woke up i knew there was something wrong. I ignored it and still managed to prepare the music room. The “show must go on” was the plan. I even took my usual after set-up selfie but the discomfort had started to get worse.
I just had to go upstairs to our bedroom to lie down and take some breather hoping to recuperate before the guys arrive. While on the bed, I soiled two shirts, all soaking wet with perspiration due to profuse cold sweating while trying to weather the pain. It was darn awful!
Eventually, I had myself driven to the clinic (my wife Vicky and dear friend Cali were already there waiting for me) because i could not bear the suffering anymore. After being examined by the resident doctor, I was then administered two intravenous shots as a remedy for the diagnosed acute hyperacidity and abdominal spasms. Some minutes later I was allowed to be released from confinement only as soon as the meds had taken effect and the abdominal pain subsided.
Praise and thank God, today I wake up refreshed and relieved from that agonizing ordeal. No more abdominal pains. I hope and pray I will never encounter this experience ever again.
While all these were happening behind the scene, the Friday Jam still lived on in the music room. I would have wanted to join the guys after I was released but naturally it was only smart to just relax and recover fully. Besides, I was already too spent and tired from the ordeal.
Well, the photos and jam videos taken of last night will just have to speak for itself for now.
Thanks to everyone who came, took care and managed the place without me around, carrying on and living up to our much anticipated weekend tradition.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Oct. 13, 2017 - A new song at the Magic Hour (Dindi)

OCT. 13, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE

Notwithstanding the stormy weather, bad traffic conditions (being a weekend work payday) and falling on a Friday the 13th (if you are superstitious…I’m not!), our Friday Jam Night lived on and was unperturbed. In fact, the gathering started pretty early with Air Asia flyboy and guitarist Loren Orendain already in the music room setting up his gear while I was still preparing the place. With the rains pouring relentlessly practically all evening and flooding being a conceivable threat, it was quite surprising that things looked up and progressed smoothly till the very end.
Early bird Gab Villanueva showed up at his usual time while house band bassist Rick Trinidad, who habitually comes a bit later in the evening, decided to skip routine and come early to make sure to be around when guitarist extraordinaire Anton Atengco and his music room newby friend arrives. It was, in fact, an exciting coincidence for both guitarists Loren and Anton that the two were to try out and test their newly acquired axes in the room for the first time. And boy, both Telecaster guitars sounded and looked awesome, to say the least.
Apparently, Anton’s new acquisition came from his companion and friend, Frank Resulta, a guitar aficionado and a crooner. Loren, on the other hand, bought his guitar very recently when he flew to the US for a few week’s vacation with the wife.
An hour or so later, percussionist Vincent Garrucho was the next musician to arrive. Finally, the jam commences with Loren, Anton, Rick, Vincent and myself on stage. We proceeded and jammed some old time favorites showcasing the two guitarists’ new toys. Great sound guys!
At past 2am, the place suddenly became more alive when friends of Vicky (my loving wife) and her gang came straight from another gathering to join us. On that list were, Johnny Wassmer, Luisa Distor, Tecci Sevilla, Girrard Jison, Allan Rufino, Raul Julian, my sis-in-law Ana and Strumm’s Open Mic singer John Fernandez. At this time the house band was already very much intact with Tinnie Esguerra already in the house completing the line-up. John eventually joined the band on stage to do vocals.
When Vicky’s friends left, it was past 3am. Now that we were just by ourselves, it was time for the Magic Hour. On board was Monchie Henares (who had just arrived) on vocals, Tinnie on keyboards, Rick on bass, Vincent on percussion and myself on drums.
It was gratifying to be able to learn and record a new song again to add to our growing repertoire. With Tinnie back to the fore, the band is again on track. With his strong leadership and tutelage, we hope to be able to learn more new tunes in the coming weeks. Crossing our fingers on this one.
Finally, at exactly 5:10am and still raining outside, it was time to call it a night. Another great night indeed! Thank and praise God!
Till the next time….
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Oct. 6, 2017 - Monchie Henares and Tony Tirol (When I Met You)

OCT. 6, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE & PHOTOS

Similarly to last week, last night’s turnout was also a handful but contrastingly told a different story from the previous. The festivity started at its usual customary hour and habit with Gab Villanueva as the early bird and the front runner. Soon music room old timers Jeff Tan and Tony Tirol arrived. The time was past 9pm. Everything seemed normal and on the right course. It appeared that we were back to normal.

Having some pleasant and engrossing chit chat with delightful personalities like Jeff, Tony and Gab can be fun and enjoyable, to say the least. In fact, too engrossing was the food and culinary conversation that we mostly dwelled on for too long, maybe an hour or so on the topic, made my stomach grumble. I had to sneak out and clandestinely ordered pizza to satisfy the craving even if I had to take the tab. What’s the point of suffering, right…hahaha! So be it.
After almost an hour of agonizing wait (apparently the delivery man’s motorcycle broke down on the way), the 2 boxes of pizzas finally arrived…thank God. By this time, it was already 11pm. Air Force brat Ed Diano makes his timely entrance followed closely by house band percussionist Vincent Garrucho. Both right on time for the taking. Perfect timing guys!
Alas, already at past midnight, there was still no evidence that we will be able to jam. Still no proper line-up of musicians around to work with. I actually had already conditioned my mind not to play and just bask and enjoy the good company. No problem there.
However, at past 1am, Rick Trinidad and Monchie Henares arrived. With Rick and Monchie plus Tony, Vincent and myself available, it appeared that we finally might have a chance to jam after all…and so we did.
We made the most of our humble resources and ability having fun playing a Christmas carol that we had arranged uniquely ourselves. Rick was playing the guitar, Monchie on drums and vocals, Jeff on keyboards, Tony on vocals, Vincent on percussions, flute and vocals and myself on bass.
The band suddenly got a welcome unexpected boost when house band honcho Tinnie Esguerra suddenly showed up at past 2am. With the main man around, we were finally back in business. The Magic Hour lives on.
Just like the usual, we meticulously ran through some choice tunes, painstakingly trying it out till short of perfection, with the master Tin Man spearheading the group. As always, it is a refreshing and fulfilling experience to work with a perfectionist like Tinnie. Hat’s off to a great talent and friend.
Despite initial plans of ending the jam earlier than usual so that vocalist Monchie can have his rest, anticipating his first ever paid gig happening lunchtime, we found ourselves still concluding and packing up at 5am. We wish Monchie all the best on his first paid performance. Shake a leg kumpadre!
And so that’s how the cookie crumbled for this week’s Friday Jam Night. Thank and praise God for making each and every gathering unique, gratifying and fulfilling one.
See you all next time!
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Sept. 29, 2017 - Bubui Colico (Rainbow)

SEPT. 29, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE

Amusingly, my chosen favorite #7 just made it to last night’s eventual story, significantly with just seven guys (apart from myself) and a total of seven hours of interaction from start to conclusion. A relaxing and tame night but with full of surprises were to be the general description to last night’s Friday Jam gathering. With the traffic situation and weather not really posing problems to influence attendance, it definitely was just one of those days.
Gab Villanueva was, as always, the first to show up but arrived a bit later than his usual. Looking tired and weary from his full day of gallivanting, it was already a quarter to 10 when he arrived. Soon, dear old friends Jody and Badette Mariano walks in. What a pleasant surprise to see them both and finding precious time away from their busy schedules to visit. A friend since the 70’s, Badette, apart from her other bustling businesses, is a dynamic and vibrant producer of live musical shows both staged internationally and locally while her loving husband Jody, on the other hand, is a veteran honcho of the mainstream network ABS-CBN. Welcome back to the music room Jody and Badette. By the way, thank you both for the sumptuous boxes of pizza you shared with us. God bless you.
Next on the list to show up was keyboard wiz Atty. Pecky Casuela. Great to see him back, as well, as it had been a while since his last time over. As always enjoyable to jam with, Pecky’s song choices are always exciting and fun to do.
Another welcome surprise was house band rhythm guitar master Joaco Marco’s sought after presence. Ultra busy from his UBER and rent-a-car business, Joaco finally found and squeezed in time to drop by and jam after almost two months in absentia.
With the elusive house band drummer Bubui Colico arriving too adding to the roster and myself doing bass chores, we were all set and ready to roll.
Last to arrive coming from another gathering was Luisa Distor. Though an able vocalist herself, she did not sing but just opted to be on the side to help out in manning the camera. Thanks Luisa.
The jam was short but sweet with the band eventually recording two videos before calling it a night. With Pecky already on his way home, Bubui vacated his drumming then shifted to do vocals and actually made a good accounting of himself singing a popular Southboarder OPM tune with just myself and Joaco backing him up on guitar and bass. Good job Bubui!
We were indeed shorthanded on musicians but still managed to enjoy our time on stage despite the setback. The show must go, as the saying goes.
The stage was quiet and empty at 3:35am. Obviously much too early, comparatively speaking to our normal end time but it does happen once in a while. No big deal.
When the rest of the guests had left, shortly after the live music stopped, Joaco and I opted to stay a bit longer so that he can finish his beer and more chit chat at the outdoor lounging area near the entrance. The time was 4:45am, exactly 7 hours total from the time the first guest arrived. A calm but definitely a gratifying night it is, still. No reason to complain. Praise and thank God!
Let’s see how it goes next weekend. Till then…….
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Sept, 22, 2017 - Monchie Henares (Going Out Of My Head)

SEPT. 22, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE

Just when you had already concluded on the worst scenario, basing it on logical thinking, it suddenly reverses and changes for the better. Unpredictable as always, one should learn not to underestimate the outcome of each Friday jam night prematurely before it is totally over. Though I was almost guilty of the thought myself, last night was another proof of it’s perplexity. There always seem to be a light shining brightly at the end of the tunnel if we just wait and trust faith.
The evening started really slow with just balik-music room Jp Bugarin (who arrived at already past 9pm) and myself in the music room on our lonesome (a record breaker of sorts) technically the whole of Friday. It was already past midnight when bassist Rick Trinidad, the second person to arrive, showed up. With still no signs of any other guests arriving soon, it would seem that it was going to be only us the whole time. It was going to be a quiet night. If we did intend to even jam at all, we really had no choice but to settle with just the bass and guitar and maybe some vocals to compliment. Pathetic.
Well, less than an hour later, percussionist Vincent Garrucho walks in. Slowly the tribe was increasing and gaining ground with another personality to add to the roster. Then suddenly out of nowhere, lo and behold, house band main man Tinnie Esguerra walks in the door. I was so elated to see Tinnie back in the room. Having been out of commission way too long, i must say that the Tin Man’s presence was indeed sorely missed by all of us, his friends and band mates, alike. An amazing talent and friend that he is, he is the very soul and principal character of the Pete’s Place music room house band. Yes, the band survived without the man but never been the same without his valuable contribution and presence. Thank you for coming and welcome back to the fore my friend.
At this late hour, despite crippling some jammers supposedly on their way to the music room due to the sudden downpour and flooding, vocalist and PAL flight crew Papo Xavier, on the other hand, persevered and braved the floods arriving along with Arlene Zabala Pascua, Maryana Arinez and their new member Mylar Villarin of Marmalade whom he coerced to ferry from their gig in Q.C. With these talented ladies around, you can be assured of a great show. Welcome back ladies.
As expected, the jam progressed and shot up to high gear, each alternating roles with Arlene on the keys and vocals, Mylar and Papo on vocals, Tinnie on guitar and keyboards, Rick on bass, guitar and drums, Vincent on percs, guitar, flute and vocals, Monchie on vocals and drums and finally myself on drums and bass.
A variety of genres and catchy tunes were on the menu courtesy of Arlene and her band, gamely taking the helm, while the rest of us did back up. Everyone had so much fun that we could hardly decide when to actually stop playing. What a jam! Finally at 5:30am it was time to call it a night.
Our gratitude to all the other friends and guests who showed up as well. And so, what initially seemed to be a dull and insignificant night became an epic one. What can I say but…Thank and praise God!
See you all next week!
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jam at Pete's Place - Sept. 15, 2017 - Joko's original composition (Jupiter)

SEPT. 15, 2017 - FRIDAY JAM UPDATE

The weekend payday “carmagedon” fiasco is not normally regarded as an issue to our Friday Jam nights having broken the pattern on a number of occasions in the past but seemingly the law of averages finally caught up on us last night. The usual early birds were no-shows and most of the musicians who had even planned to come will eventually not make it.
It was already a few minutes before 11pm that the first two guests finally arrives. Apparently, it took Jay Reantaso and his son Joko more than an hour and a half to get here from BF Homes, Sucat where they live. I heard that as early as late afternoon, it was practically gridlock everywhere. Thank God that it did not rain, otherwise it could’ve been total chaos.
Of course Joko brought along his guitar and gear but had to put it on hold temporarily as there was no band roster to speak of to even start a jam. It was already past midnight when house band bassist Rick Trinidad showed up. Only then did we have some semblance of order to start some noise on stage. With Joko on guitar, Rick on bass and myself on drums, we were finally good to give it a shot.
With Joko’s maiden record album already in the making with original instrumental compositions on its tracks and soon to be released, we tested on playing one of his work live for the first time. It will just have to be purely Rick and Joko in collaboration doing all the intricate instrumental details with myself just keeping time on the drum kit. Knowing my limitations on my meager musical skills to deliver, it was purely just for the fun of it for me. Please don’t shoot me. I'm just a trying hard wannabe.
At past 1am, house band vocalist Monchie Henares finally arrives after deciding on hanging out some place else on the way, while waiting for the traffic to subside. Luisa Distor who herself is a competent chanteuse, fortunately walks in the room, too, to add to the list.
When the Reantaso father and son tandem was about to leave as it was already past 3am, keyboard lord Kiko Montecillo timely shows up. Kiko usually comes late because of his Friday gig commitments. He will take over the keys with Monchie and Luisa on vocals and Vincent Garrucho (who also got in late coming from his gig as well) alternately on percussions, guitar and flute. Apart from singing, Monchie played the drums on some songs while I played bass the whole time. It was to be the Magic Hour for us playing a variety of songs and genres conceivable. As always a pleasurable experience.
We still played a good solid hour with Kiko till about 4:30am before we finally packed up. All’s well that ends well, as i always say. Thank and praise God!
And so, with practically just a handful of us in attendance for the night, it still was fun, fulfilling and all worthwhile, to say the least. That is indeed all that matters, is it not? C’est la vie.
Till the next time.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! GOD BLESS US ALL!
